What's The Buzz?
By Leeuna FosterIf you have children who attend public school, you've probably noticed that when school begins in the fall, viruses begin to float around. One kid sneezes and fifty other kids get sick. When the germs become airborne it's almost impossible to keep the virus from spreading.
Which leads me to the next point--gossip. Gossip spreads almost as fast, if not faster than, germs. One person acquires a tidbit of information, tells it to someone else, who in turn tells someone else....and soon a huge buzz is created. This buzz continues until nearly everyone knows about it. And those who don't know are asking questions trying to get informed.
Which leads me to the main point I am trying to make here...Viral marketing. Viral marketing or Buzz marketing is by far the most inexpensive and cost effective of any other type of advertising. It is also the most effective way to sell your product. Curiosity may have killed the cat..but it is also human nature to satisfy our curiosity. We Earthlings were born with the desire to know what everyone else is doing...
The Internet has made "viral marketing" much easier and more effective than ever before. How many times do you forward a joke, a funny picture, an interesting article..and how many people have seen it before you received it from someone? Why not add a "buzz word" or short line at the end of your email that will create an interest. YOU know something that others DON'T know?
Find a group of people who really need your service or product. Don't try to sell them on your product. Just mention it casually and tell how great it has worked for you. Act as though you are giving them some privileged information. Drop a name here or there and tell them how so-and-so told you about it and how they heard it from what's-his-name.
Brainstorm and discover a word or short phrase that will create an interest in your product or service. What comes to mind when you hear the phrase "It's the real thing"? or the question "Got
Milk?" Several years ago a little lady asked a simple question that was heard around the world and was responsible for over a million dollar increase in the sale of burgers. The question? "Where's the beef?". Use you own imagination. Be creative. Be funny. Be unique.
Lately a lot of viral advertising websites have sprung up all over the internet. Many of them allow you to place a banner or a short text ad on your main sign up page. Each time someone signs up from your page, they are allowed to add their text ad or banner. Your ad moves down to the next spot on their page and they also advertise it. This keeps repeating itself over and over and soon you have thousands of people viewing your ad on their pages.
Building and maintaining a blog or "weblog" is another great method of Viral marketing. Also by joining various networking groups you will gain exposure for your business.
The main thing is to get your program seen, get it noticed and get people talking about it.
Create a buzz and keep it going. See how far your "virus" will spread. You may find yourself with thousands of marketeers, who don't even realize they are marketing.
